Holland America Canada & New England 2028: How to Choose Your Ship and Route

Choose a Holland America Canada & New England cruise by its actual route and start and finish cities before choosing by ship name. The announced May through October 2028 season uses Volendam and post-Evolution Zuiderdam, with seven- to 14-day cruises and longer Collectors’ Voyages. Those choices are not interchangeable: a Boston roundtrip and a one-way journey involving Montréal or Québec City create different vacations and travel costs.

Begin with roundtrip versus one-way

A roundtrip can simplify air planning because your cruise starts and finishes in the same city. It does not necessarily simplify every port day, and you should still check arrival time, terminal arrangements and whether you want a hotel night before boarding. A one-way route can let you spend time in two cities without retracing the cruise, but compare flights into one gateway and home from another before deciding it is better value.

The season announcement lists departures from Montréal, Québec City, Boston, New York and Fort Lauderdale across different sailings. It does not say both ships visit all five cities. In particular, do not substitute Montréal for Québec City when booking flights: they are distinct gateways with separate transfer plans.

Use specific itinerary examples, not a season-wide port list

HAL’s October 1 release identifies Volendam’s June 7, 2028, 10-day Montréal-to-Boston itinerary with Québec and Newfoundland calls. It also lists Volendam’s September 30 nine-day Montréal-to-New York voyage, and 11-day Montréal roundtrips on May 27 and August 29. These examples show why checking both the route and duration is more useful than searching for a generic Canada cruise.

The same release identifies post-Evolution Zuiderdam’s October 14, 2028, 14-day Québec City-to-Fort Lauderdale voyage. That is a longer coastal journey, not a Montréal roundtrip. Compare the entire day-by-day itinerary, including sea days and arrival times, to see whether you want a regional week or a longer trip connecting Canada with Florida.

Some announced itineraries have late calls in Charlottetown or Saint John, or an overnight in Québec City. Do not assume those features appear on every departure. An overnight may justify a different sightseeing plan from a short daytime call; a late departure is useful only if the particular attraction or restaurant you want is open and reachable.

What changes the ship decision?

Zuiderdam is scheduled to complete its Evolution transformation in April 2028. Announced additions include Solo Verandah staterooms, Bridgeview Suites and Grand Dutch Café. That gives travelers a reason to examine its post-transformation cabin choices, but it does not mean Volendam has the same new categories or that a familiar category code means the same accommodation across ships.

Our first comparison would keep the destination priorities constant, then weigh cabin layout, sailing length and transportation costs. If Montréal is essential, look for a confirmed itinerary naming Montréal rather than choosing Zuiderdam for an announced venue and expecting the route to match afterward. If the ship experience is the priority, allow the departure and arrival cities to vary.

Plan for the season without promising foliage

May, midsummer and October are different travel choices. Decide whether your priority is city time, coastal scenery or a chance of autumn color, then match dates to your own flexibility. Foliage timing depends on weather and location; no sailing date guarantees peak leaves throughout a multi-port itinerary. Likewise, listed ports and wildlife opportunities are not guaranteed outcomes.

Mobility planning deserves its own check. Ask whether each scheduled call uses a dock or tender, what the selected excursion requires, and whether transport and attractions suit your needs. Do not infer accessibility from a port’s name or from the ship alone. Give our team the relevant requirements before you pay for a cabin or excursion.

Questions travelers ask

Do both ships sail from Montréal?

Do not assume so. The announcement gives a season-wide list of gateways; match the named ship to the exact itinerary. Its specific Montréal examples include Volendam.

Can I guarantee fall foliage with an October cruise?

No. Weather and location affect timing. Choose a route you would enjoy even if the colors arrive earlier or later than hoped.

Is a one-way cruise cheaper than a roundtrip?

Not automatically. Compare cruise fare, separate arrival and departure flights, transfers and any city hotel nights together.

Are all calls suitable for limited mobility?

That requires a sailing-specific and excursion-specific check, including tender arrangements and attraction access. A regional itinerary name is not enough.

Check current HAL rates and ask our team about one ship and date. Include party size, cabin preference, budget and any mobility requirements. We will compare the actual itinerary rather than promise the same ports or benefits on every cruise.
